Barbados Marriage Requirements...


Barbados' simplified marriage requirements and the availability of professional wedding planners and services makes it the ideal place to pledge your vows. There is no required waiting period or minimum length of stay. Both parties must apply for a license in person at the office of the Ministry of Home Affairs in the capital city Bridgetown. You will require:

  • Valid passports
  • Original or certified birth certificates.
  • Visa's required from Eastern European countries, The CIS, China, Taiwan, S. Africa, India, Pakistan, Egypt, non-commonwealth countries of Africa, all S. American countries except Argentina, Brazil, Columbia and Venezuela.
  • Return tickets.
  • If either party was divorced, an original Decree Absolute or a certified copy of the Final Judgment not the Decree Nisi .
  • If either party was previously married and widowed, a certified copy of the Marriage Certificate and Death Certificate in respect of the deceased spouse.
  • For non-residents of Barbados, the fee is BDS $200.00 BDS cash/ $100.00 US cash and a $25 BDS stamp.
  • Two witnesses are also required at the ceremony, and a wedding planner can help with this if you do not have attendants accompanying you.
  • For a Roman Catholic ceremony, the relevant documents must be sent by your bishop to the bishop of Bridgetown.
  • For Jewish weddings, the couple must bring their own Rabbi, as there are none on the island.
  • Arrangements should be made with a local Minister of Religion or a Magistrate prior to the completion of an application form for a license.
  • Both the bride & groom must go in person to apply for the marriage license at the Ministry of Home Affairs located on the 5th floor of the General Post Office Building, Cheapside, Bridgetown.
  • Where necessary, all documents not in English must be accompanied by a certified translation by an authorized Notary Public.
  • Persons under the age of sixteen cannot be legally married in Barbados.
  • For persons between the ages of sixteen and eighteen, the consent of both parents must be obtained and both parents must be present at the time of application.
